DG Youth Orchestra
Dumfries and Galloway Youth Orchestra

Taking Part

The orchestra has now been going since 2018! We even managed to put on activities through the pandemic and came out the other side with diminished numbers, but with renewed enthusiasm! Of course young players in youth orchestras grow up and leave for pastures new and we are no different. So we are always looking to recruit new players. Our entry requirements are simple - we are looking for enthusiastic young musicians who play an orchestral instrument, ideally at Grade 3 or above. But we also welcome less advanced players who love playing music and would like to get involved. Indeed, if you haven't yet started to play an instrument why not come to one of our rehearsals to listen and speak to one of our team who may be able to help you to find a teacher or an instrument that you'd like!  We are also able to provide travelling expenses to those who need them.  If you do please speak to one of the trustees. Our aim is for our members to enjoy making music and learning about it at the same time. In addition to participating in a full orchestra you will receive expert tuition from professional musicians in smaller groups. You will have the opportunity to play in the orchestra regularly with other young folk under the expert guidance of Jane Hainey who was, for many years, a 1st violinist with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. You will also have the opportunity to play in short concerts for your family and friends and, as your confidence increases, for the public as well!

The orchestra meets regularly in the spring and autumn and is free to join.
