DGYO - November Performance

DGYO will be having a concert in March to showcase some of the music the Orchestra has been playing over the year. Following our November rehearsals we held a short performance to show parents how well the players were doing. The pieces being played are from: 'Hoedown' (Copland); 'Finlandia' (Sibelius); 'Short Ride in a Fast Machine' (Adams); 'Match of the Day' (Stoller).

DGYO Concert 26 March 2022

On 26 March the orchestra gave a stirring concert to a packed audience of parents and supporters. You can see below video clips of the pieces they played. Each of them had its own challenges, but highlights for us were the Shostakovich and Mambo. The young players rose to the challenge splendidly. We all look forward to the next sessions.

A Short Concert on 28th August 2021

After an enforced gap of 18 months (during which we did the best we could online) DGYO got back together on 21 August 2021 in the assembly hall of St Joseph's College, Dumfries and on 28 August performed a short concert for the enjoyment of parents of the players. The programme consisted of two Klezmer pieces, Sh'chuna K'tana (A small quarter) and U'vneh Yerushalaim (no translation), Trad. Arr. Carmen Ehinger; the Dies Irae and Tuba Mirum from Verdi's Requiem; and a number that some of us remember hearing on the "wireless" in our youth - 'Rock Around The Clock'.

Drums Masterclass

A short excerpt from a two hour masterclass given by Thomas Lang.
Cameron Court, one of our select band of percussionists, distinguished himself a few weeks ago in our last virtual concert by giving a bravura performance of Monti's Csárdás arranged for xylophone.  But Cameron also plays the drum kit and his hero is the virtuoso drummer Thomas Lang.  We were delighted that Thomas agreed to give Cameron a masterclass on the drum kit all the way from his base in Los Angeles.

DGYO - Another Remote Performance

Following the success of our previous remote performance last summer of Purcell's "Rondeau", we challenged our players to put together another mash-up, this time of Bizet's "Toreador's Song" from his opera "Carmen".  As before, the youngsters submitted recordings of themselves playing their individual parts from the BBC 10 Pieces arrangement of the piece. These were then knitted together into an orchestral performance. Well done to all who contributed!

Virtual Concert - 13 July 2020

On 13th July 2020 members of the Youth Orchestra, still unable to meet together in the flesh, joined together remotedly from their homes to delight their virtual audience through the wonders of Zoom.  The participants each played solo pieces which they had prepared for the concert.  The young musicians were introduced individually by Musical Director Jane Hainey and then performed.  The rather variable quality of Zoom did not spoil this wonderful live performance but we were very grateful to many of the musicians who re-recorded their pieces and sent them in to be included in this edited record of the concert.  We hope you enjoy it.
